NIRMV Vice President

Maureen McGerty finds joy in contributing to help people. Her experiences prove that she believes volunteering time and talents generously is so important and meaningful. A member of Detroit Working Writers, a Detroit 300 Heritage Organization and a 501(c)6 non-profit for the literary arts, McGerty is an Honorary Director who served as Writer’s Conference Co-Chair, President and Press Relations Chair. Tapped by then-President Darlene House, her involvement during DWW’s centennial year led to organizing and presenting Readings at local bookstores, a holiday book sale at Detroit’s Renaissance Center, and an extensive public relations effort to celebrate DWW’s enduring role in fostering excellence in creative writing. During the early 2000s, McGerty served as a board member of the Macomb Ballet Company and helped to raise funds for the Company. As a member and volunteer in recent years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica, Michigan, she participates in two social outreach ministries: MCREST and the weekly “Supper-Sack Lunch-Shower” program, a community meal and fellowship for the homeless and financially challenged men, women, and children of metro Detroit. Putting her writing skill set to work, she served as a member of the church’s fund-raising team. As a single parent, McGerty also volunteered her time and talents to school-related activities – baking, sewing costumes for junior operas, pageants, and plays, and chaperoning/chauffeuring to sport events.

McGerty graduated from Wayne State University, earning two Bachelor of Arts degrees in English/Journalism and Psychology and later a Master of Arts degree in English and Creative Writing. Her professional background has morphed from journalism to public relations to scholarly publishing, evidence that a solid foundation of linguistic skills is a necessity in life. She loves being a part of another human being’s journey to read and write well. McGerty’s involvement with NIRMV began in 2008 when she received recognition as a “Volunteer of the Year” from this organization.
